with a world class routine that included Markelova, a super Gienger and a high double layout dismount. Sometime early this morning Terin and Courtney were to leave Missouri for a week-long training session in Houston at the Karolyi's Ranch before leaving for Athens. With them they took memories of the outpouring of pride and gratitude from scores of well-wishers during a send-off celebration at Great American Gymnastic Express in Blue Springs on Thursday afternoon. The Odessa High School band played, and the crowd shouted for the gymnasts to go for gold. Terin and Courtney posed for photos, signed autographs and talked with all the youngsters in attendance, while many of the adults were holding giant golden bows.

The funds keep on coming in, making sure the families of Olympic gymnasts Terin and her teammate, Courtney McCool, make it to Athens to watch their girls. Bank Midwest, where Humphrey's father, Steve, is a loan officer in Cameron, Mo, has seen what was initially an employee's-only fund blossom into a systems-wide collection point for contributions. Yes, you go to your local Bank Midwest and donate. A fund supporting the McCool family has been set up at the Bank of Lee's Summit. You can call (816) 508-6512. The Web site http://www.designedbytim.com/mccool/ has raised more than $5.000 for support of the McCool and Humphrey expenses.
And now Sheridan's Frozen Custard, with 12 sites in and around the Kansas City area, is about to get in on the act.
From 11 am through 11 pm Thursday, 20 percent of sales on a concrete — it's frozen custard you eat with a spoon, and it costs from $3.20 to $4.50 — will go to support the gymnasts' families' Olympic expense funds. The hope, according to the Sheridan people, is to raise at least $2.500 for each family.

Terin took another important step towards realising her Olympic Dream with her 7th place finish at the US Olympic Trials held in Anaheim over the weekend. Terin was in 4th place all around until the final rotation where a mishap on vault saw her drop in the rankings slightly. As expected she was selected by Marta Karolyi to travel to the National Training centre where the final selection of the 2004 US Olympic Team will take place. Terin finished the competition ranked 2nd on floor and 3rd on beam (including posting the highest score on that event on night 2). Congratulations on a great competition Terin and good luck at the camp! For full results visit USAG.

The 2004 US Nationals are underway in Nashville, Tennessee! The event has drawn one of the strongest fields ever assembled in the United States and is serving as an initial Olympic Trials of sorts with only 12 athletes from Nationals able to progress to the actual Trials scheduled for late June in Anaheim. Terin performed extremely well in the preliminary round. Posting strong scores over the four events she is currently sitting in 4th place all around. Her best performance came on floor exercise where she scored 9.500 - the 4th best performance on that event of any athlete in the competition. She was also awarded a 9.425 for her new double twisting yurchenko with few but known vault specialists scoring higher! Solid results on bars (9.450) and beam (9.300) rounded out her competition. All in all a great night for Terin who had this to say after the competition: "I feel comfortable in my routines. My goal coming into the competition was top five.". For full results visit USAG. If you are in the USA be sure to tune into NBC on Saturday at 1:00pm to catch all of the action from the prelims!

Terin, who is a strong senior student at Odessa High School, has started her recruiting trips to colleges. Sources close to the Alabama Gymnastics program report that Terin gave a verbal commitment today to the Crimson Tide after having a great recruiting visit over the weekend during the Alabama-Oklahoma festivities. She elected not to make visits to UCLA and Stanford, which also recruited her heavily.

Despite the setbacks and after losing three world medalists to injury and illness this week, Terin and her fellow four remaining teammates performed flawlessly to win tonight the first team gold ever at World Championships for the USA, men or women. Terin performed only on floor exercise, but with a smile throughout set for an amazing 9.300 to help the team USA (112.573) to top defending world champion Romania (110.833) by 1.74 points. Australia (110.335) finished third to win the first world team medal ever for the country. "This is great," Terin said at the press conference after the team finals. "Our team is all about the team. We pulled together at the right time. I was a little nervous, but after a while it got better. The crowd helped me a lot." Congratulations on a great competition Terin and all of the USA team members!

The USA team member Courtney Kupets injured her left Achilles tendon during afternoon training on Tuesday at the Worlds and has withdrawn from the rest of the event. Courtney, who was in the line-up to compete all four events in team finals, will be replaced by Chellsie Memmel on vault, Carly Patterson on uneven bars, Hollie Vise on balance beam and Terin on floor exercise, where she will be performing her beautiful Armenian Tango routine.

Annia Portuondo Hatch has been removed from the USA's World Championships team lineup, after a training accident left her with a dislocated knee, a torn ACL, and torn medial and lateral meniscus. She will be replaced by alternate Terin who will compete in two events, vault and floor exercise, where she last year placed in the top 11 in the World on both of those events.
